The black and yellow bands of St John’s Point Lighthouse in Co. Down are among the most recognisable sights on the Irish coast. The exteriors of both lightkeepers’ houses on the site, which we call Ketch and Sloop, have just been repainted thanks to a sponsorship from Graphenstone Ireland.
The exposed coastline, salt air and constant weather make lighthouse sites demanding on paint. The doors of both houses in particular were badly weathered and needed a lot of attention. We engaged a local contractor to treat and paint the doors, windows and exterior walls, and they now look fresh and well cared for.
Both houses are available to book, whether as a pair for groups of up to eight or individually. Income from stays is what enables us to complete the essential maintenance of these buildings. Regular use keeps them heated and aired, helping them last for many more years to come. Simply by booking a stay, you are giving these buildings a future.
Graphenstone at Irish Landmark Trust
Traditional stone and lime walls need to release moisture, and treatments that block this can lead to damp and damage over time. Coastal properties need even more protection. We use only breathable paint across the portfolio, and Graphenstone’s paints are lime-based, low-VOC’s, with graphene added for durability. We are grateful to Graphenstone Ireland for supplying paint for some of our recent projects.
St John’s Point is the third Irish Landmark Trust property to be painted with Graphenstone:
-
Termon House, Co. Donegal – the exterior of this former 18th century land agent’s house in Maghery was our first project, completed in May 2026.
-
Head Gardener’s House at Fota House, Co. Cork – interior and exterior, completed ahead of the property’s opening in July 2026. The colours have gotten a shoutout in numerous guest reviews, on social media and in press coverage including the Irish Times, Irish Independent and The Gloss.
-
St John’s Point, Co. Down – the exteriors of both lightkeepers’ houses were our latest project.
