How Much Does It Cost to Bring a Dog on Holiday in Ireland?

There is a cost question that most dog owners quietly factor into every holiday booking, even when it is not written on the page anywhere.

What is the pet fee? Is it per night or per stay? Are there charges I will not find out about until I arrive?

The answers vary more than they should. Across Irish accommodation, pet charges range from nothing at all to per-night fees that add meaningfully to the total cost of a week away. Understanding what you are likely to pay — and where hidden costs tend to appear — makes planning a lot more straightforward.

This guide breaks down the real cost of bringing a dog on holiday in Ireland, from typical pet fees to the practical expenses worth thinking about before you book.

Quick Facts:

Dog-Friendly Holiday Costs in Ireland

The Most Common Dog-Friendly Accommodation Costs in Ireland

Pet Fees at Hotels in Ireland

Hotels that accept dogs in Ireland typically charge a pet fee on top of the room rate. How that fee is structured varies considerably.

Many hotels apply a per-night charge, meaning the cost of bringing your dog increases with the length of your stay. On a seven-night trip, a per-night fee that seems reasonable can add up to a meaningful additional expense by the end of the week.

Some hotels charge a refundable deposit rather than a fee, which is returned provided there is no damage. Others add a flat cleaning surcharge at checkout rather than advertising a pet charge upfront.

The inconsistency is one of the more frustrating things about booking with a dog. The same nightly rate may include or exclude pet costs depending on how the property has chosen to structure things, and it is not always obvious which until you read the booking confirmation carefully.

It is always worth asking directly before confirming any hotel booking: is there a pet charge, how is it applied, and does it appear in the total displayed at checkout?

Pet Fees at Self-Catering Accommodation in Ireland

Self-catering accommodation tends to handle pet fees more transparently.

Because the whole property is yours for the duration of the stay, the question of where dogs can and cannot go is less complicated, and the fee structure tends to reflect that. A flat charge per stay, stated upfront at the time of booking, is more common than in hotels.

At Irish Landmark Trust, the pet fee is €30 per dog per stay. This is a flat rate that applies regardless of how many nights you book, and it is displayed clearly before you confirm the reservation. There are no additional nightly charges and no cleaning surcharges applied at departure beyond any damage caused.

Some properties accept one dog; others accept two. This is noted on individual property pages. The full conditions of bringing a dog — including lead requirements, rules about furniture, and conditions for leaving a dog alone — are set out in the pet policy before you book.

What the Irish Landmark Trust Pet Fee Covers

The €30 per dog fee covers your dog’s presence at the property for the full stay. It is the only pet-related charge you will see unless a dog causes damage during the stay.

What it does not mean is that all Irish Landmark Trust properties accept dogs. Only certain properties are designated dog-friendly. The full list of dog-friendly properties is available before booking, and if a dog is brought to a property that does not accept them, we reserve the right to refuse access.

The Comparison: A Week in Ireland With Your Dog

To make the cost difference concrete, it helps to compare what a seven-night trip typically looks like across different types of accommodation.

At a Dog-Friendly Hotel

At a hotel charging a per-night pet fee, the dog cost for a seven-night stay runs at seven times that fee. On top of the room rate, you may also encounter costs for:

  • Separate meal areas or limited access to hotel facilities
  • Restrictions on leaving your dog alone, which may mean additional spending on dog-sitting or care while you visit certain attractions

The total pet-related cost for a hotel week can vary considerably depending on the property and the fee structure. It is worth calculating the full amount before comparing rates.

At a Dog-Friendly Self-Catering Cottage

At an Irish Landmark Trust property, the pet cost for a seven-night stay is €30 — the same flat fee that applies for two nights or fourteen nights.

The stay also typically includes:

  • Full use of the property for both you and your dog
  • No shared spaces or other guests to navigate
  • Freedom to come and go around walks without hotel schedules
  • Access to countryside or coastal settings where walking routes begin at the door

Other Costs Worth Factoring In

The accommodation fee is usually the most visible dog-related cost. But a few others are worth thinking about before you travel.

Supplies You Would Bring Anyway

Most of the things your dog needs on holiday are things you already own: lead, bed, bowls, towels for wet paws, waste bags and any regular medications.

If you are staying in a self-catering property in a rural or coastal area, it is worth bringing enough dog food for the full stay rather than assuming you can restock locally. In remote parts of Ireland, particularly the west coast and northwest, large supermarkets are often 30 to 40 minutes from the accommodation. Kilrush, Ennis, Galway and Sligo town are the nearest substantial towns for many Wild Atlantic Way properties.

Vet Access

For most straightforward holidays, vet access is simply a matter of knowing where the nearest clinic is before you go. The property green book will include this information.

Emergency vet costs, if they arise, are no different in Ireland than at home — though if you have pet insurance, check whether your policy covers you during travel. Some travel insurance policies also include provisions for pets.

For properties in very remote locations, it is worth noting that the nearest vet may be 20 to 45 minutes away. This is not a reason not to travel, but it is useful to know in advance.

Beach and Trail Access

Walking routes and beaches are free to access in almost all parts of Ireland. Car parks at popular beaches are usually free in rural areas, though some busier locations charge in summer months.

Dogs must be on leads at most Irish beaches. Some beaches apply seasonal restrictions on dogs between June and August. Always check local signage on arrival rather than assuming open access.

Is the Cost Worth It?

For most dog owners who holiday regularly in Ireland, the honest answer is yes — with the right accommodation.

The cost of bringing a dog on a self-catering holiday, when the pet fee is a flat rate and the property is genuinely set up for it, is modest relative to the total cost of the trip. What varies is not so much the fee itself as the quality of the experience.

A stay in a property that has genuinely thought about travelling with a dog — where the fee is clear, the outdoor access is honest about lead requirements, and the surrounding landscape offers real walking — is a very different experience from one where dogs are technically permitted but the environment makes it harder work than it needs to be.

The cost of the pet fee is rarely the deciding factor. The real question is whether the property and location give you and your dog the kind of trip worth paying for.

FAQs: The Cost of Bringing a Dog on Holiday in Ireland

Is there usually a pet fee for dog-friendly accommodation in Ireland?

Yes, in most cases. The structure varies: hotels often charge per night, while self-catering properties typically charge a flat fee per stay. Irish Landmark Trust charges €30 per dog per stay, regardless of the length of the visit.

What does the Irish Landmark Trust pet fee cover?

The €30 per dog fee covers your dog’s stay at the property for the full duration of your booking. There are no additional nightly charges. Guests are liable for any damage caused during the stay.

Do hotel pet fees in Ireland apply per night or per stay?

This varies between hotels. Many apply a per-night charge, which increases with the length of the stay. It is always worth asking directly before booking rather than assuming.

What other costs should I budget for when travelling to Ireland with a dog?

The main practical costs beyond the accommodation fee are: any supplies you need to bring from home (food, medications, towels, waste bags), and vet costs if an emergency arises. Walking routes and beaches are free in almost all cases.

Is pet insurance worth having for a holiday in Ireland?

If you already have pet insurance, check whether it covers travel. Some policies include holiday cover; others do not. If an emergency arose and your dog needed veterinary treatment, the cost would be the same as at home.

How many dogs can I bring to an Irish Landmark Trust property?

It depends on the property. Some accept one dog; others accept two. The number is stated on each property’s page. The full list of dog-friendly properties is available before booking.
