Are you planning on travelling to Great Britain or the USA? Would you like to experience staying in a Landmark property? Did you know that there are Landmark Trust organisations in Great Britain and the USA with heritage properties for you to explore?
Both organisations, like ourselves, work to save heritage buildings that are at risk and give them new life by making them available as self-catering holiday homes.
Founded in 1965, The Landmark Trust is one of Britain’s leading building conservation charities. They have over 200 fantastic properties including picturesque pavillions and medieval long-houses, artillery forts and Gotick follies, clan chiefs’ castles and cotton weavers cottages, the homes of great writers and the creations of great architects from Browning to Boswell, from Pugin to Palladio. The Landmark Trust USA was established in 1991 and is based in Vermont. They have five wonderful heritage properties within an hour’s drive of each other.
Their five Vermont properties represent a variety of architectural styles from 1802 to 1915 and include a sugarhouse (pictured) carriage house, farmhouses, and hillside manor house. Their best-known property is Rudyard Kipling’s Naulakha, the famed southern Vermont retreat where Kipling wrote The Jungle Book. Onsite, there is the working Scott Farm Orchard and Market where over 130 certified ecologically grown heirloom apple varieties are grown. Visitors can pick their own apples and visit the market to pick up freshly picked fruit, jams, jellies, pies, and cider. To browse or book please click here.
We would recommend a stay with either organisation if you are planning on travelling to the UK or USA.

Tell us about your organisation
The Landmark Trust USA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 and based in the rolling green hills of southern Vermont. Our mission is to preserve and restore historic properties through creative and sustainable uses for public enjoyment, education, and inspiration. We accomplish this through our stewardship of five beautifully restored historic properties and a working farm.
What sort of properties do you have?
Our five overnight rental properties represent a variety of architectural styles from 1802 to 1915 and sleep 2 to 8 people each. Each property is distinctive and fully restored to highlight its historic character. Our best-known property is Rudyard Kipling’s Naulakha, the famed home where Kipling wrote The Jungle Book. Kipling’s Carriage House, a converted sugarhouse, two charming farmhouses, and an heirloom apple orchard complete the scene.
Who books your properties?
Our restored homes are popular for couples, families, and friend groups from throughout the US and the world coming for vacations and retreats. The pristine rural location of our properties makes for a perfect true escape from the troubles of the world. Two of our properties also welcome dogs so the whole family can enjoy the rejuvenation of our country getaways.
Why do they book your properties?
Landmark Trust USA guests come back year after year for honored family traditions or first time getaways to experience Vermont’s lush fall foliage, tranquil winter wonderland, and easy access to New England’s unspoiled outdoors. Some of our guests seek a bit of Kipling’s inspiration, while others are intrigued by the chance to experience the real Vermont by staying in a building that once produced maple syrup. All appreciate the unique history and opportunity to do good through their vacation.
